Black Wing by Christina Henry

I just finish reading this Urban Fantasy novel. It's a fun book to read, but, I have a feeling that the author didn't think complete her world building or think it through thoroughly before writing her story and my feelings is proven right because the author herself said she only has an idea of the beginning and end of the book when she started writing and many a times, and she didn't know what would happen next. And she came up with the plot base on the feelings at the moment of writing (she said she listen to her song list to get into the mood of the particular plot). So, it feels like she made up things a lot the way, including the mythology in her world.

Plot that doesn't make sense:

1. When an male angel mate with a human woman, she gives birth to a giant monster call a nephilim that would rip open her stomach to come out. At the end, the angel Lucifer showed up, and the Maddy (the protagonist) said she went teary eyed when she saw Lucifer's face that is full of love for Avengeline only. Maddy made it sound like this woman is Lucifer's one true love and he has only ever love this woman so much. But, knowing that a child created from their union would kill the woman when she came out, why still mate with her? Yes, her children turn out to be not monsters, but, Lucifer won't know that. All his other children by human women are monsters and so are children of other angels that mate with human women. So, why did he still do it. This is supposed to be his one true love.

2. So, Lucifer mate with a woman and created a nephilim called Ramuel . Fine. Then, Ramuel raped a female angel and the angel gave birth to a male child that is prefectly beautiful without a trace of monster feature in it. No only does me not have monster features, he does not have the monster temperament that his father and all his monster uncles have. But, he has power that can bind a nephilim due to his bloodline. How convinient. He only inherit the good stuff. There is no explaination of it.

3. Another convinient thing is Maddy, who is also the product of an angel and a human woman, turns out to be half-human instead of nephilim. Ok. this can be explained by the fact that she's Avengeline's descendant, so, her mom also inherit Avengeline's special gene of not no giving birth to nephilim. But, still a very convinient thing that this happen to the protagonist. And I have a problem with angels to proclaim to love the women they mate with but still do so knowing the risk.

4. Maddy gain a high status in the fallen angel realm because she's the daughter of a chief fallen angel and a many-times-great granddaughter of Lucifer, and she doesn't turn out to be nephilim. But, Gabriel, who is the grandson of Lucifer and a son of an angel became a pariah and outcast and a thrall because he was half-nephilim, eventhough he does not inherit any nephilic feature or nature. You would think that being a gandson of Lucifer, his status would be higher. Ok, the author did explain that Lucifer and other Grigory decreed a law that said nephlim is forbidden to have children because the fallen angels were afraid that there will be more monsters. But, they also won't kill the nephilim because the nephilim are their children. So, Gabriel is a forbidden offspring. But, Gabriel is beautiful and has angel features. He's not a monster. Wouldn't Lucifer cherish him like he cherish Avengeline's children? But, not only that he didn't, he even look at his own grandson as a pariah and called him thrall. He wanted to kill Gabriel at birth and it took another fallen angel to vouche for him. But, that angel also just keep Gabriel as a bond servent of the lowest status. Every angel look at Gabriel like he'sa dalit (the untouchable in Indian caste system). Honestly, wouldn't these angels be careful a bit? They don't know when Lucifer would suddenly acknowledge Grabiel as his gandson. I feel that the author want to make Gabriel as pitiful as he can be, but, she doesn't cover all grounds in his backstory to make it logical.

5. Lastly, Lucifer's enemy want to kill the last direct descendant of Lucifer as revenge and Maddy supposedly Avengeline's last direct descendants. But, if Avengeline's children are the soul collectors/agents, and Maddy postulate that tha's how death agents came about,  wouldn't all soul collectors be Avengeline's direct descendants. How come only Maddy is and others are not? If there is only one source, wouldn't all the descendants that come from it be direct descendants?

But, despite all the complaints on illogical stuff, I think I'm going to check out book 2, just to see how the Gabriel storyline develop and how Maddy avoid marrying Nathaniel. I wonder if the author will let Gabriel finally get acceptance and acknowledgement from Lucifer or not. Another interesting development is Lucifer knew Maddy loves Gabriel and he's using Gabriel's safety to make Maddy do it bidding. Kinda sick, using his grandson's life to treathen his great-granddaughter.  Gabriel must feel very awful that his granddaddy treated him like an outcast and a pariah. But, it seems that he has been trained to think from birth that this is is how it should be from what he said to Maddy. He didn't seem to think the should be another way. He's like eternally grateful to his master to keep him alive when Azazel most probably did no because he's useful.

I also hope Gabriel's mother will appear. But, this won't happen in book 2. I read the synopsis of book 2. Gabriel will disappear and Maddy will need to go to fairyland.
