Reading Divergent now by Veronica Roth now.
The book's concept is interesting - seperating people in different group base on their aptitude. Reminds me of Harry Potter's hat sorting.
In the book, there's 5 factions - Erudite, Abnegation, Candor, Dauntless, Amity.
But, there's also a group of people called Divergent that have aptitude for more than one virtue. It's supposed to be very rare. But, I find it illogical. I think Divergent should be the majority since most people have more than one virtues/flaws/inclination/traits. No one is so straight-forward. I hope the author will show this later.
In the novel, Tris's aptutide test showed her to be a Divergent because she has aptitude for Abnegation, Dauntless and Erudite. She was shocked when her brother Caleb chose to join Erudite when he has been selfless throughout his life and it seems to come naturally to him. Tris was bitter that her brother pretended all these years. I tend to disagree. Caleb can be both smart and selfless. He can be Divergent too, or, he has aptitude to be selfless, but, his aptitude for wisdom/thirst for knowlege is greater. This doesn't mean he pretended all these while.
One thing I wonder. During the Choosing Ceremony, can a person chose a faction that he/she has no aptitude for? Say, if someone is from Erudite and have no aptitude for Amity. But, he likes the life of the Amity faction with everyone being so nice and happy and peaceful. Can he choose Amity?
I suppose Divergent is you are who you want to be. That is the ultimate point. That it takes 3 books to get to that point is a bit self indulgent?
