When I read the comment this Romanian has on Malaysia, I was very amazed. His comment was practically glowing. Of course, I can see that this Romanian probably did not see the undercurrent problem that is going on in Malaysia.
But, this article really makes me think. Are we really so much better off than many other countries and only we don't know it ourselves? We see all those beautiful European countries on TV. But, in reality, they are not as good as they look?
This article really open my eyes in some ways. Many tourists praise Malaysia for their friendliness and natural resource. But, this is the first time I read a European tourist (whose country I thought is more developed) praise Malaysia for its development and advancement. The petrol comment is especially funny. Malaysian do like to whine about petrol price and say how this and that country' petrol is way cheaper.

Complicated chinese characters
Why would anyone use such a complicated character for the name of a type of noodles?
The noodle is only eaten by the Emperor?

Stories behind nursery rhymes
It's interesting how a lot of nursery rhymes we used to sing as kids originated from the olden day people using these rhymes to talk about certain sad events. It's like Journey to the West is actually a story criticising the then government of the country. Many english nursery rhymes are the same. People couldn't tell it directly, so, they used nursery rhymes.

Bible Stories 9
Read Exodus 23.
It's interesting how it's Moses who talks sense into God when God wants to destroy all Isreal's descendants over the Golden Calf issue and it's Moses who talk sense into Him and reminding him of his promise to Abraham. Very interesting. The God in this Old Testament sounds so much like the Greek gods with their tempers and emotions and rash action/decision. This God also need to be reminded constantly of his promise to Abraham. And he purposely harden the heart of the Egyptian Pharaoh to make the Isrealites hard to leave so that He can show his might and power.
But, Moses' action to appease and seek justice for God is also quite drastic. Asking the Levites to kill 3000 people, just for that Golden Calf issue.
Truly a very fearsome God.

Bible Stories 8
Read Exodus now. Moses just received the 10 Commandments.
Read the parts that lead up to this moment, there are a lot of ah-ha moments. Like you see the events you have read as a child happening, like a kind of morning light rising.
One is the no idol commandment that will later lead to the golden calf events. Another is the forming in the priest or rabbi system when Moses picked several capable elders and taught them the law of God so that they could judge small cases on their behalf. I initially thought this will lead to the 10 commandments where the elders will follow the commandments. But, it soon turn out to be later and not this event that lead to the 10 commandments.
But, when the 10 Commandments finally come, the Ah Ha moment is still great.
Side Note: Just found out the Red Sea can also mean the Reed Sea.
Now, reading the law that God set.
I find this law kinda conniving.
If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free.
But if the servant declares, 'I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,'
then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the door-post and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.
Who would want to leave his wife and children behind and go away alone? There's not much choice. Making this rule to bind a slave for life is not very fair. But, then, the world at that time is different. Slavery is legal. Slave are considered properties.
Reading about how God always side the Isrealites, I initially thought 'Why like that? All are his children'. But, later I understand. This Bible stories were written during the tribal time where each tribes have their own God that look over them. Also, God has chosen the Isrealites to follow Him and pray to Him. The Isrealites also have extra duties and commandments to follow. So, it is only right that He protect them more.

Love letter jigsaw takes 15 years
A man spent 15 years piecing together 2,000 fragments of love letters to his late wife which she tore up when she caught someone reading them.
Ted Howard, 82, wrote 98 letters to Molly during the seven years he spent travelling Europe as a farm worker.
When she found someone reading them in 1953 she tore them up.
Mr Howard, of Ramsey in Cambridgeshire, began putting the pieces back together in 1993 and has just completed the notes, three years after his wife died.
He wrote the love letters on hotel writing paper as he travelled the UK, Ireland, France and Holland in the late 1940s and early 1950s. But his wife tore each one into more than 20 pieces creating more than 2,000 fragments, some smaller than a thumbnail.

He started by separating corner and centre pieces and progressed, putting them together spending about an hour every day over 15 years.
One letter ends: "Well, my dear, I am looking forward to seeing you again.
"It seems months since Sunday when I last saw you. There does not seem to be a lot more to write about, my love, so until we meet again, I send you all my love, from your ever loving sweetheart, Ted."
Mr Howard said: "I still miss Molly terribly but having the memories helps me through.

"The letters brought back so many good times." He now plans to write a book based on the letters which will be dedicated to his wife.
The retired farm worker and machinery demonstrator, said: "It was love at first sight.
"No two ways about it. I was at a village feast (fair) and this girl jumped off the carousel and came careering into me.
"It turned out to be Molly. That was 19 July 1948."
Molly was 18 at the time and Ted was 23. They married in 1955 and went on to have three children and six grandchildren.
Ted wrote his autobiography before attempting to write a book about the letters.
His autobiography, Life on the Fen Edge, is due to published by Bound Biographies.
Ted developed his writing skills by studying literacy courses with learndirect.
His work was recognised when he won the Special Judging Panel Award at the regional learndirect achievement awards.

Life and love under a tree for 25 years

Left without a roof over their heads for marrying against their families' wishes, a couple in Jharkhand took shelter under a tree 25 years ago. It was to be their nest for the rest of their life.
Mangra Mahali and his wife Balkhi, both tribals in their early 50s, have been living under a tree near the Tatisilve railway station, about 30 km from here.
The couple lived in the same village and fell in love. But their families opposed their union and they were thrown out of their homes.
The couple then went to the village temple to take shelter. The priest, fearing a backlash from the parents and villagers, refused to provide them shelter. Left with no option, the couple spent the night under the tree, locally known as the dudhiya pakhar which resembles the banyan tree.
"When we got up in the morning, we had nowhere to go. We decided to convert the tree into our abode. Since then we have been staying here," Mangra told IANS.
For a roof, the couple has covered the branches of the tree with plastic sheets, which protects them from the scorching sun and rain.
In the name of household articles, they possess some utensils, blankets, a few bags and a makeshift oven.
Balkhi even gave birth to her two sons in this makeshift house under the tree. The eldest son, who got married two years ago, has now built his own home. But the couple, who sell bamboo sticks used as toothbrushes at the Tatisilverailway station, refused to move to the new house.
"We have spent 25 years under this tree. When no one provided us shelter it was this tree that helped us. How can we leave this place? Our good and bad memories are associated with this tree," said Mangra.
Their two sons, Soriha and Ajay Mahali, who are daily wage earners, feel proud of their parents.
"They fought bad times with firmness and stayed here instead of running away. My parents are role models for all couples in love to stay united even in bad times," said Ajay.
The priest at the temple said: "We salute the Mahali couple. Out of social compulsion, I had refused shelterto them at the temple. The couple never took help from anyone. With their hard labour they sustained themselves and raised their children."
Said Mangra: "Life was tough for us after marriage. But we supported each other emotionally and fought back to lead a humble life. We feel satisfied after 25 years of our marriage."

Reflection
Self-evaluation -> Failed
Just came back from praying to a Chinese God. I join in the first prayer, but, didn't join in the second. While I was waiting, I observe 5 old people being begger. The just sit there on the road since with their plastic mug. Some of them put their plastic mug out. I want to give them money, but, a lot of thoughts going through my mind.
1. There are 5 people and if I give, I have to give 5.
2. I can only give 20 cent, but, is 20 cent too little for today's standard?
3. No one is giving and a lot of people is watching. Would it be awkward if I go give the beggers money one by one?
4. If my housemates see I give, will they question me? Will they say I'm being cheated or that I'm encouraging people not work?
I took out 5 piece of 20 cents and contemplate a lot. I was giving myself excuse not to give like maybe they are they are not that destitute, maybe they just want easy money. But, I see them all old. I think to myself, who in their old age would want to have such a life of they have other options? Sitting at the dirty road side, begging, without dignity. Those men, when young, probably were strong and can work and must have life a more comfortable life than now. But, they are old now, employment opportunity also less. So, have to beg.
I contemplated and contemplated until my housemates came and I ended up didn't give. And the reason was not because I thought bad of the beggers or didn't want to be taken cheated/taken advantage of. The sole reason was because I was too self-concious, too afraid to be doing something different in front of people and too concern with how people see me.
So, today -> failed. I shouldn't be concerned with what my housemates think of me in this situation. I wasn't doing anything bad or wrong my book. Even if they think I'm stupid and guilible, why should I care, if I think giving to the beggers is not wrong? Even if everyone stare at me, what's the problem? I'm not running around naked.
Conclusion - Thing I need to practice. Not let others get to me too much. Not be too concern with what others think of me because only they know what they are thinking. I wouldn't know for sure. So, why should I stress myself worrying about it, and maybe see the situation as worse than it really is?
Breaking this thought pattern wouldn't be easy since it has been with me all through myself. But, I have to keep going.

Mirriam's well
Reading about Miriam.

Asclepius
Just learn about a new Greek immortal. I rank him together with Prometheus as one of my fave Greek mythology figure becuase they both did things to help human, and I would say sacrificed for human. A great hero. Asclepius is luckier though as he has an immortal father to protects him. Too bad Prometheus did not have and get saddled with a cruel punishment for eternity.
The Buddhist version of Asclepius is the Medicine-King Bodhisattva. They both has something to do with medicine and people will call to them for help in sickness.

Paranormal & sceptism
Sometimes I feel that being less sceptical is good. When you have to find out the truth all the time, and you have to prove that everyone miracle and supernatural thing is man-made and a hoax, or there's some sciencetific proof behind it, it takes the wonderment and sense of magic out of your life. Like that crop circle phenomena. I have to say that Banh Mi is really a web blanket to me in this case saying that all is a hoax. I don't want to listen to this. I just want to be fascinated with the design and the conspiracy theory behind it. I remember when I was a supernatural buff, I read these stuff with fascination, wonder at how it was made, the impossibility of it, the idea that there's something beyond, some supernatural thing happen around. The feeling was wonderful. I don't want to lost it with all the wet blanket info. There must be something supernatural around. This world will be very boring there everyone have to have an explanation, everything is just plain dry mechanical and man-made.

On healing, spirituality, psychology and reality
I've been going to a center at my place that offer complementary healing, card reading and other stuff that help you advance your spiritually and improve your life and health. After what I've gone through, I really really really want to believe these stuff can help, that things happen to me for reason. But, some how, things never failed to pop up cast doubts in my mind. Maybe I'm too critical minded. Maybe if I have more faith and believe more in the impossible and less fact minded, my situation will be better. Like one chaneller who supposed to be able to talk to many dead people and angels. In one of the books, she talk to Einstein. Being a big fan od Einstein, I read the Einstien part of the book. Maybe Einstein just got it wrong and he didn't know the facts. But, Einstein said the lesson Mozart have to deal with in his life as Mozart was his hearing problem/ear problem. I was like, 'was Beethoven the one who was deaf?' She lost credibility in my mind after that. But, I still go an see her after attending her free talk because the answers she gave me was quite accurate. But, when I actually see her personally, I was disappointed. Then, another time, when my problem first start, I went to this healer who can talk to angels and goddess again and the goddess through her tell me that I have several life times where I was who and who. I really believe her until I realise that the chronology of some of the events was not quite right -> another doubt casted. Then, recently, a local healer was high recommended by the admin of this center. So, I check out the healer and she channeled Poseidon to wash away those energies, or cord or whatever that does not serve the patient. I was like 'Poseidon, the Greek mythology see god who raped Medusa?'. I'm a big fan of Greek mythology, but, I've never considered that as anything other than Greek mythology. That's why until now, I'm still relunctant to go to her service. I believe these people are really good people and genuinely want to do good and help. And I also believe that some of them are naturally more sensitive to the spiritual realm. But, are really communicating with who they believe they are communicating with?
Are the good results from their therapy and result form Placebo Effect?
I do believe that alot of physical ailment are caused by psychological matter and those unrelease energy and unsolved issued burried deep inside own pscyhe. I just hope I can find a healer that can help me with this without dealing too much into the supernatural.

Judgement on relationships that I can't stand
Recently, I was reading an article regarding Fala Chen and her boyfriend Sit Sai Hang.
The news article was accompanied by a rather unflattering photo of Sit Sau Hang that made him look old and ugly. What made me quite angry and disgusted was the comments by the readers.
"He's ugly and old"
"she's too pretty for him"
"They don't match."
"She must be with him for the money"
"She can do better"
What disgust me most was this post
"Wow such complicated situation, wonder if Fala is with him just for the money."
What a ridiculous question. Rich guys don't have personality? Rich guys can't nice and caring? Rich guys don't have admirable attributes? Or rich guys must be jerks and girls will only be with them for the money? So, Sit Sai Hang is just $ bills and nothing else?
I'm disgusted at how people viewed girls who date rich men. Every girl was taught from young to find a dependable husband. This is what all parents want. It's also natural for a girl/woman to be attracted to a man who give can give her security (and financial security is one of them). Why call them gold diggers? Why judge them so badly just because they happen to date/marry a rich man? It doesn't matter that the woman and man has been together for years and went through a lot. If the guy is not handsome and young, she must be in it just for the money.
Another thing about these comments I'm disgusted with is how shallow their views are. They judge the girl for dating the guy for money solely because the guy his not handsome. How hypocritrical is that? Is being with a guy for his look more moral and virtueous than being with a guy for his money? Being with a guy just because he's young and handsome is not shallow?
Who are these starlets supposed to marry then? Beggers?!
But then, if the girls date someone below her station or earning less then her, they say the guy is living off her, she's too good for him. It doesn't matter than the guy has his own job and earn his own money. If he earn less, he's living off his wife. This is the case with Kelly Chen and her husband.
Then, there's a older woman/young men relationship. Older even by 1 year also is a taboo. Nope, you don't need actually age different. Just by the girl looking older than the guy, it's already a no no. Then people will say,
"They have such big age difference."
"They don't match becuase of the age different"
What ironic is, it's ok for the man to be older than the woman for 10 years. They are still very matching and look good. But, it's not ok for a woman to be older than the guy for only 5 year. "No! she's too old for him!".

Bible Stories 6
Read more of Exodus. After Moses agreed to do God's bidding and packed up with his wife and child, this passage came of out no where?
24 It happened on the way at a lodging place, that the LORD met him and wanted to kill him.25 Then Zipporah took a flint, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet; and she said,"Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me."26 So he let him alone. Then she said, "You are a bridegroom of blood," because of the circumcision.Shemot / Exodus 4:24-26
I was like 'Huh? I suddenly God want to kill him? Didn't God just sent him to free the Isrealites? What has he done to offended God?' This really perplexed me. I thought ssome part of the Bible must be omited out that explain why God want to kill Moses. Then, I remember I have read about this incident before. It was narrated in a short paragraph by someone in a joking way. It has something to do with his son not be circumcised. So, it must be something to do with it. But, I'm still perplex at the big reaction from God. Why not just tell Moses he should circumcise his son? He just told someone to go on this important mission and he wanted to kill this person with the mission he himself assigned? Strange. So, I go look up an explanation and found this. Very interesting explanation.

Could it be that this was the kind of killing that God had in mind for Moses? That the battle was not just physical, but that it was deep within Moses' heart and affecting his whole being? Could it be that Zipporah saw/felt Moses tossing and turning all night, wrestling with God, even oppressed by God to the point of death, if he did not surrender himself utterly to God? Was God after Moses' life, heart, soul, will, body, identity, his very being, in the same way God is after ours in the call of Christ? Was the vicarious circumcision of Moses really (what we Christians now understand as) the "baptism" of Moses, in which he "died to self" and finally fully accepted a new life/identity in Yahweh? R to put in in the opposite terms, is our death to self in Christ really the circumcision of Moses in which we surrender our very life to God?
In nineteenth century revivalist language, did Zipporah "pray Moses through" this intense time of struggle and surrender to God? Apart from the cultural trappings that lie behind the story, I suspect the theological intention of this divine murder attempt as part of the unfolding exodus story lies somewhere in this direction. God was after the life of Moses, much as God is after our lives, and the battle was “killing” Moses, much as it kills us. Yahweh wanted Moses' life in order that he might live and work through him, much as Christ seeks our lives that Christ might live and work through us.
Another theory said the one God wanted to kill was Moses's son becuase the child was not circumcised.

Bible Stories 5
Moses.
All along, I thought Moses was a very typical brave hero who did God's bidding. Those very strong, brave fighter warrior, and keep his fortitute in times of adversity. Overall, a very typical hero. But, one passage in the Exodus made him very human, someone who we all can be identified in. At least, I can identify with. It's the part where he lack confidence and has doubt whether the Isrealites will listen to him or not. Even after God give him the power to do magic, he was still in doubt and giving many like he's not eloquent etc. He even asked God to choose someone else. At this moment, I really can identify with Moses. Everyone will have a most of self-doubt, where one can take on a huge responsibility without messing up. Some will rather the responsibility go to someone better qualified. I have always have fear of responsibility, fear of messing things up. That's why I've never wanted to be a doctor or and architect. I don't want to misdiagnosis and causes someone's death. I don't want to mess up during surgery and cause unrepearable damage to someone. I don't want to assign wrong medicine. I don't want to calculate and design an unstable structure that will fall down and cause many death. If I'm in Moses' place, I would also rather someone else do this. But, God chose Moses for a reason. God must have seen certain quality in Moses that he himself did see.
This all go back to faith again. Faith in God and believe that He will be by your side and protect you. Faith that God wont' let you mess up when you are doing his bidding. But, I think the lesson is also to believe in yourself, believe that you have the strength in you to do difficult task and ask you to take up the challenge.
Then, read further and read the part where God ask Moses to perform all the magic that God as shown Moses in front of Pharaoh and ask the Egyptian Pharaoh to release the Isrealites, but, on the other hand God will harden the heart of the Pharaoh and he will refuse. Then, Moses will say to Pharaoh 'This is what the LORD says: Israel is my firstborn son, and I told you, "Let my son go, so he may worship me." But you refused to let him go; so I will kill your firstborn son.'
What was God playing at? Why he harden the heart of the Pharoah to make him refuse Moses' request? To test Moses? To make Moses' challenge more difficult? Or He just want a chance to show the Egyptian Pharaoh his might? If the Egyptian Pharaoh agree easily, He won't have the chance to do the firstborn killing thing. Or it's just one big sick joke. God being the puppet master, deciding how the play should go.
Haha, why am I so serious? Maybe it's just like Greek mythology. All these stories with the not so nice gods and goddesses were just made up to make the stories more exciting. I mean, if the job was easy for Moses, there won't be an exciting story to tell. Maybe there's some truth in the stories, but, with a lot on embellishment by the authors, adding lots of myth in it also writing the stories based on the mentality and mindset of that era.
Once again, the Bible reminds me of Greek mythology.

Bible Stories 4
Now started reading Exodus.
I realise that the God in OT does not protect all. His protection is just towards his chosen people, i.e. the descendants of Abraham.
And one thing that I found strange. In the beginning of Exodus, it was said that ths Israelites has been made slaves by the new Egypt king because the king was afraid of their numbers. So, after a lot of hardship, they could not stand anymore and call for God's help. And only then, God knew of their predicament and started being concern for them. Uh, I thought God is all knowing? Also, God seem to have forgotten his promise to Abraham to look after his descendants. Only when they cried for help, he suddenly remembered. Strange.
Exodus 2:
"During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God.
God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.
So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them."
Update:
Going to look up on the Reuel/Jethro confusion. Why Moses father in-law has different names. Is he like Jacob/Israel?

I've notice that from Adam's time through to Jacob, there's always 1 son chosen to continue God's covenant. The guy can have many sons and they will each prosper, but, only 1 chosen son will carry on the covenant with God. But, It seemed to have broken at the time of Jocab. I initially, I thought Joseph will carry on the covenant, because God was by his side and protected him through his hardship and God gave him the power to interprete dreams. But, he didn't. The Bible just said he died in Egypt and he did not bless his sons like his ancestors did. In fact, his first 2 sons was adopted and blessed by Jacob. Also, his relationship with God was different from his ancestors. For his ancestors, God actually asked them to go this way and that and they followed God's instruction. But, for Joseph, he was sold by his brothers to some traveling group who in turn sold him to Egypt and he later realised it was all God's plan so that he can save his tribe later.
It's also interesting that in Genesis, Jacob more like curse Simeon and Levi,
Simeon and Levi are brothers—
their swords are weapons of violence.
Let me not enter their council,
let me not join their assembly,
for they have killed men in their anger
and hamstrung oxen as they pleased.
Cursed be their anger, so fierce,
and their fury, so cruel!
I will scatter them in Jacob
and disperse them in Israel.
But, Moses was born under the Levi tribe and he will be the one who bring the Isrealites out of slavery.

I've notice that from Adam's time through to Jacob, there's always 1 son chosen to continue God's covenant. The guy can have many sons and they will each prosper, but, only 1 chosen son will carry on the covenant with God. But, It seemed to have broken at the time of Jocab. I initially, I thought Joseph will carry on the covenant, because God was by his side and protected him through his hardship and God gave him the power to interprete dreams. But, he didn't. The Bible just said he died in Egypt and he did not bless his sons like his ancestors did. In fact, his first 2 sons was adopted and blessed by Jacob. Also, his relationship with God was different from his ancestors. For his ancestors, God actually asked them to go this way and that and they followed God's instruction. But, for Joseph, he was sold by his brothers to some traveling group who in turn sold him to Egypt and he later realised it was all God's plan so that he can save his tribe later.
It's also interesting that in Genesis, Jacob more like curse Simeon and Levi,
Simeon and Levi are brothers—

悲如喜
有悲就有喜，有喜就有悲。嚟個道理我信，因為兩個都係一種感覺。有冇可能淨係要喜不要悲? 我覺得唔可能。要真真正正脫離悲痛，就要學識 detach。但係我們可以淨係detach悲痛但係唔detach喜悅嗎?
佛家話，喜都係一個痛苦的根源。因為，當你失去令你喜悅嘅野，你就會感覺悲哀。所以，要detach, 就detach所有貪嗔癡愛恨。可能我唔夠了解乜嘢係真正的平靜同bliss。有人話，detachment 不是冇感覺。你仍然可以樂在其中。只係，當快樂時光完了，你就放手，不要癡戀。同樣，傷心完就算，不要不放。Uh, 噉咪係冇美好回憶囉？回想都冇感覺。

Bible Stories 3
Reading the Story of Joseph now. I really really like Joseph and his story. Compare to his ancestors, he really is very upright. He he loyal and trustworthy. He's grateful to his Egyptian master and won't betray his trust. He didn't sucumb to lust and he's not conniving and, like one blogger said, very honest.
But, he's not without flaw. When he was young, he was a tale-teller and going finger. Always giving bad reports to his father about his brothers. No wonder his brothers hate him (besides the reason that their father show extreme favouritism to him).
I like how this story shows the growth of the brothers and the message of forgiveness and blamelessness that it convey.
After the brothers sold Joseph and saw how devastated their father was, they grew to be less selfish, especially Judah, who willingly trade place with Benjamin to become a slave so that his father won't experience the heartbreak of losing another beloved son again. He has really became a filial son. But, it got to hurt knowing that your father love your brother more and losing you will be less devastating than losing your brother. But, Jacob's favouritism was understandable. Rachel was the one he wanted. He work 14 years to get her hand in marriage. He was tricked into marrying Leah. So, him favouring her offspring was understandable.
I also like that Joseph forgave his brother for what they did to him and in fact not blaming his brothers at all. Instead he saw this as God's arrangement to send him to away to save his family later. I think all of them grew as a person. I don't know whether future stories will be like this or not. But, for the past stories I read, there's not much growth in the major players of the stories. The only other one I saw that show growth wa Esau, who also show a big heart in forgiving Jacob.
"And he sent his brethren away, and they departed. And he said to them, Do not quarrel on the way."
Haha, Joseph is so funny. He must have reminiscence of the past.

I did say I like Joseph a lot. But, one thing I don't agree with him was him taking advantage of the famine and made whole of Egypt bondage to the Pharoah. He took their money, then livestock, then, their land and even the people. I know it's the people themselves to offered out of desperation. But, I think he should be more benevolent instead of businessmanlike. On the other hand, he's a very good servant of the Pharoah, very loyal. Pharoah sure will love him a lot.
The blessing part is also funny. Why Jacob asked Joseph to put his hand under his thigh to make a promise? What's the reason behind this act?
An the part where Jacob bless all his sons. Some of the 'blessing' sure sound strange, and its so specific it looks like a prediction. Poor Reuban. He's a nice guy, but, made a big mistake. Now, got a bad blessing from his father. (Sounds like the china stage play 'Lui Yu' to me). I think this blessing story was again just to explain the condition of the existing tribe at the times.

The Green Hornet
I'm going to watch this movie when it comes out. Watch the series as a kid. Although I don't remember much of it, I still have fond feelings of it. And I remember liking Kato becuase he's Chinese. There's not many asians in western movies and series, so, when I saw a chinese looking actor/character, I'll especially like. :D
So, I'm obviously going to watch this movie more for Kato and Jay Chou.

Memory and a children song
Memory is such a strange thing. The more you try to recall, the more you can't.
Yesterday, I was watching the local series 'The Age of Glory II'. In it, a character was playing a song with his harmonica. The song sounded familiar and my housemate immediately said it's a song that was used in 'The Greed of Man', but, she only knew the chinese version. I clearly remembered there's a english version, but, however much I tried to recall, I couldn't recall what was the song, not even a word of the lyrics. I asked another housemate, and she confirmed there's an english version, but couldn't remember either. I tried hard to scan my memory for children's songs and even look and children's songs list. Lots of songs popped up in my mind. 'You Are My Sunshine', 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star', 'The More We Get Together' etc. But somehow, I couldn't recall that song. Until I came to office today, and asked my collegue and she said it's 'Red River Valley'.
So, here's this elusive song that has me crack my brain last night. Enjoy a nostalgic trip down memory lane. :)

your name and your life
Do you believe that your name will influence your life? Many cultures their own method choosing a good name for a child or studying a name to see to see how it influence one's life.
In western culture, we have numerology where you assign numbers to each alphabet of your name and add it up in various ways to determine the influences it have on a you.
In chinese culture, you have the brushstroke and the elements (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth).
Do you believe that just by changing your name, you can change your life? I have 4 people seen my chinese name and all 4 said it's not a good name, especially the character in the middle. But, I like that character in my name because not many people use that character in a name (haha, maybe the above reason is why not many people use it). So, I was relunctant to change it. I think one can succeed despite bad names. One shouldn't be so not in control of one's life.
But, I do believe your name influence your life in one way. For example, if you have a weird name that people can make fun of, it will affect your way of thought or how you see yourself. If you have a funny name that made people can't take you seriously, it will also affect your life in a way.

Work/Career
Can someone work in a job he doesn't like for his whole life just for financial security and making a living? I read a lot of books that says, in order to success you will have to love what you do and to live a fullfilling life, you have to go with your passion. But, on the practical side, your passion will not neccessarily put food in your mouth.
Do you actually know what you want in life or are you just going with the flow and see what life brings you?
How willing are you to take risk and going out of your comfort (and not so comfort but bearable) zone? To do something new? To not worry about this and that when making a decision?
As the saying goes, 'no risk, no gain'. But there's also s saying '小心駛得萬年船' (equivalent proverb: Caution is the parent of safety) . How to balance this? Take risk but at the same time be sensible?
Is it too late to change the course of my life now?

Book: The Gospels' Veiled Agenda
On hiatus from reading the Bible. Stop at Genesis 38. Am currently reading a book by Harry Freedman can 'The Gospels' Veiled Agenda'. Very interesting from a historical POV as he dissect the Bible stories and showing parallels between OT and NT.
Currently, I'm reading the lottery part where Pilate let the Jews choose whether to release the Jesus Christ or Barabbas (whose first name also happen to be Jesus). The book said this is parallel to the tradition of the Jews where one goat will be sacrificed to God while the other goat will be released to the wilderness carrying the sins of the people. The second goat is called Azazel (which later got mistranslated to english as scapegoat). According to the book, this ritual originated from a pagan ritual of human sacrifice where 2 men will be chosen for the ritual (supposedly to appease the demons). One man will have to kill the other man as a sacrifice. The killer will then carry the sin of the murder and be exiled to the wilderness to live alone i.e. excommunicated from the tribe. A Jewish scholar Hyam Maccoby coined the term 'Sacred Executioner' for this person. This way, the tribe will be protected from the guilt of the murder by shifting the blame to this person. But god of the tribe (or the demon god) will protect him since he carried the burden of the sins for the tribe. The author think this practice was later modified and they use goats instead. But, unlike the ritual, Jesus became the sacrificed one and also carried the sins of mankind. But, what interest me was the choice of the Jews choosing Barabbas over Jesus. Reading the book, I can understand the choice. I don't think they chose Barabbas over Jesus because they hated Jesus such much that they would choose a murderer and hardened criminal over him. Yes, Barabbas was a murderer, but, his was also condemned for 'a certain rebellion made in the city'. From this, he seem to me more like a revolutionary fighter than your usual criminal. Maybe he was someone who was fighting against the oppressive Roman rule. So, maybe the choice wasn't so easy after all. It's between 2 revolution leaders. Maybe one used the Mahatma Gandhi way and the other use the Guerrilla fighter way and the majority of the people asked preferred the latter. Just my take on it.

Bible Stories 2
Read about Esau and Jacob.
When I first read this story last year, I don't like Esau for the way he gotten Esau's birthright from Esau. I considered it cheating. But, now reading the story again, I don't feel the same way. It's true that he took advantage of Esau in his weak moment, but, it's Esau himself who decide to give over his birthright for a meal. Can't blame anyone.
I wonder, during Abraham and Jacob's time, was it common for people who kill someone's husband just to get the wife? Both Abraham and Jacob told people that their wife was their sister when they traveled to another place because they were afraid people will killed them for their beautiful wife.
Just remember this one. Forgot to put earlier. When I read about Lot leaving Sodom with his family and his wife look back and turned to salt. This reminded me of the Greek Mythology story where Orpheus traveled to the Underworld to get his dead wife back. He was able to persuade and Hades and Persephone to let him take his wife back but he could not look back while on the journey out to see whether his wife was following. He did look back and his wife faded back to the Underworld.
I also like the part where Sarah laughed (rather in disbelieve I think) when Abraham told her God will bestow her a child. She laughed because she's over the age of childbirth. When God asked her why she laughed, she denied that she did and God just said 'Yes, you did'. So funny.
Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. Abraham and Sarah were already old and well advanced in years, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, "After I am worn out and my master [d] is old, will I now have this pleasure?"
Then the LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Will I really have a child, now that I am old?' Is anything too hard for the LORD ? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son."
Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, "I did not laugh."
But he said, "Yes, you did laugh."

Read more on Esau and Jacob. Earlier, I don't blame Jacob for getting the birthright from Esau in an open bargain. But, the second deceit is not easily justified. Jacob totally cheated his father and snatched the blessing from Esau. Why is Rebekah so bias? Both are her sons. It's interesting that this outcome has already predicted or destine by God.
The LORD said to her,

one people will be stronger than the other,
and the older will serve the younger."
Bible Stories 1
I don't think anyone read my blog at all now. But, I'll post it anyway.
I've read bits an pieces of Bible stories when I was young, but, has never actually read the whole Bible. So, I decided to start reading it since I got a copy from my aunt's place (New King James Version). I started last year, but, many things happened that made me discontinued doing it. Last week I started again. This time, I read the 'New International Version' I just bought.
Now, I'm up to the story of Abraham sacrificing his son to God. This man really really have great faith and trust in God. How many people nowadays can do that? People who said they know God and communicate with God. If one day, they hear God says 'Sacrifice your child to me', who will actually do it? If the father really do that, people nowadays will call him crazy and be disgusted with him. I've not, so far, read any news of any monotheist religions follower doing that. But, I have read reports about parents using their kids has sacrifice in black magic.
I wonder what Abraham was thinking when he led Isaac to the altar of sacrifice. Did he believe that God will show some miracles in the last minute? Did he ever expect God to intervene in the last minute? Or he completely trust in God's decision and ready to actually sacrifice his son. It's kinda painful when I read how his son asked him where's the sacrificial lamb. I wonder what was his feeling at that time. Did he feel any pain and sadness?
Other interesting parts I get from the Bible. God was the one who sabotage human twice. Once, when he shorted man's lifespan from 900+ years to 120 years. Another time was when God saw the descendants of Ham building a tower to heaven to make a name for themselves and to prevent their city from being scattered. At that time, everyone spoke the same language. God saw what they did and said 'If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.' So, God went and confused their language and scattered them over the face of the whole Earth. I guess God has a right to do that since he created man in the first place. He must have his reason. One interesting point I found. Many a times, when God was referring to self, He always use 'us'. Who was He talking to? Even when he first created man, He said, 'Let us make man in out image'. Strange. I double check with the New King James Version. It also use 'us'.
The story of Noah and his sons is quite strange. What did the story actually want to tell us? How come Noah's reaction so big towards what Ham did?
I like the story of Sarah, Abraham and Hagar. Very human. I don't know, I especially interested in Ishmael (maybe because of the injustices he and his mom faced, him being the firstborn, but being driven away and lived in the dessert as archer. Can write a good story about it). Glad that God still blessed him even thought he's not the chosen one for the covenant.
I felt sorry for those Kings that Abraham lied to for self-preservation when he told then Sarah was his sister. When they took Sarah as their consort, God punished them. I like that one argued back and said he did it with a clear conscience since he did not know Sarah was Abraham's wife.
Lastly, I do not know what to say about Adam's response to God when God chastised him for eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge, "The woman you put here with me - she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it." Sound like blaming God.
God in the Old Testament seems to be favouring one chosen group instead of loving all fairly. I'll read on to see what more I can find and understand.
It was interesting now I read about Cain and Abel. In the version I read, it just said Cain was farmer and he took someone of the crops to God as offering. But, the children Bible story I read when I was young, it said Cain took rotten (or not very good ones) crops to God. Was the children's Bible trying to justify to kids why God rejected Cain's offerings? But, anyhow, Cain shouldn't have killed Abel.
Maybe all these stories are just metaphor to some teachings. But, still interesting read.

Con syndicate scam
I received this email from a friend. This is very reliable because I personally have received phone call from this Inspector Chew from this particular number. He said there's account open under my name is HK Citibank to 'wash black money'. It was opened by 2 people (he gave 2 names which I don't know). He asked me to go to Bukit Aman police station to make a cover report. Luckily, my colleague help me made inquiries and confirmed this is fake. I later also received phone from Citibank but I didn't pick it up.

This just happened a few minutes ago. Somebody by the name of Inspector Chew King Hwa from Bukit Aman and called my husband's hand phone looking for me saying that I was implicated in some money laundering cases (I really wished that I had those money). He gave a contact number which was 03-2262 6222.
when I checked online, it is true that the number belongs to Bukit Aman HQ. So I called using my office phone to the number and I was told by the operator at the Bukit Aman HQ that there is a syndicate with inside people from Celcom and Telekom which is running these scams. They offer to settle your case outside and ask for money to bank into certain accounts. The operator said everyday the Bukit Aman HQ receives 40-50 calls from the public, people like me asking for verification. Bukit Aman said they will change their phone number soon because of this scam.
The clever thing about this group is that, when they call you on your hand phone, the number shown would be 03-2262 6222. I guess if you call this number from hand phone, or directly pressing on the number received on your hand phone without re-keying in the numbers again through the keypad, you will reach the syndicate as they must have manipulated either the caller identity and created a fake line with the insiders' assistance from Celcom/ Maxis/Digi. But if you call the same number using land line (Telekom) as I did, only will you be able to reach the real Bukit Aman HQ.
So it looks like the con men are also getting smarter. But you can straightaway tell from the way the caller speaks, that he is not very educated and hence not likely to be of the caliber of an officer.

Robin Hood Morality Test

Haha, such a positive analysis. The first sentence I can't say it's true. But, the second sentence is definitely true. Maybe I should put the first sentence as the goal to be achieved. The men seem like a good catch. Chivalry + idealism. :D

Do not let anyone demo on half your face!!
How long does the effect of Nu Skin spa last? Please don't tell me it's a month.
Do not let anyone do demo on half your face if you don't intend on buying their product or have not decided to buy on the spot. No try try, ok? Take my advice.
I've done a very stupid thing last Sunday. I let someone do demo for their skin product on half of my face. Now, my face in unbalance and unsymmetric liao. One side thinner the other side. What more, I actually prefer the rounder shape of my original face. :(
Luckily she said the effect is less because she's using her body charge for the device instead of mine. If using my body charge, the effect will be better. I thank God for that. If not my face will be even more unbalance.
I mentioned to her now my face is unbalance. She said, I can do the other face as well? I asked her 'buy the product?'. She said she can do the other face, but, she only come for demo that day and not enough time. But, she has time to sit for another 1 1/2 hour to chat with my housemate. :mad:
So angry with her and so angry with myself for my inability to say 'no' when I was feeling apprehensive about doing half the face in the first place. I've myself to blame. But, I never thought it will even change the shape of my face and also the lines on my eyelid. Now, my eyes and face shape in unsymmetric. The device is used to iron out your wrinkles and pull your skin tighter and maybe firm up your muscle gua.
What so good about a thin and V shape face? Why everyone want it? And why everyone want to bleach their skin. The woman also emphasis that the product have skin-whitening effect (maybe becuase she saw I'm dark skin). I told her skin whitening is not that important to me. I just want my skin clean and healthy. It's not that I want my skin to be charcoal, but, natural color is ok for me.
Btw, Nu Skin is a very effective product according to a friend who has used them since 2005. She told me Nu Skin solve her bad skin problem. I ask her roughly how long is the effect of the home spa. She also told me the effect will last roughly two weeks. Hope it's true. My friend told me maybe I should have bought one of her product and then asked her to do my the other half of my face.
I won't buy the whole set as its expensive and certainly won't buy that home spa device. But, I might buy a cleanser or toner when need be since that friend said it's so good. But, I won't buy from that woman!
Still hitting myself for my stupidity!! Stupid!! Stupid!! Stupid!!
